LKFS AND LOUDNESS METERING

Consistent loudness throughout a program, and from one program to the next in TV and broadcasting, has always been a difficult issue. Inceasingly, broadcasters and regulators are requiring that program loudness (as opposed to level) conforms to an objective standard - the internationally recognised BS 1770. This article provides a perpsective on all this, as well as an explanation of LKFS.

Although it has an American persective, it is still relevant to our experience.

This article from FreeTV Australia gives a more local perspective. Particularly interesting is this: "The loudness meter compliant with BS.1770 is a long term integrating meter developed for measuring the finished product e.g. a 30 second commercial or a 90 minute movie. It is NOT a production tool to be used for mixing."
