BACK TO 2006 AWARDS

The 8th Annual Australian Screen Sound Awards 2005 were held at the Wharf Theatre Restaurant, situated in the Rocks, Sydney, on the evening of Monday 7th November.

Check out the complete list of winners!

The ASSG is very proud of their awards night and this year was no exception with well over one hundred people enjoying the big night. Each year the standard of entries gets better and better and now because so many of the sound studios are doing work for countries such as China and Vietnam (to name two), the competitive styles are fantastic.

This year our Student Encouragement Award went to Lucas Bone. As well as receiving the award he was also rewarded with a Pro-tools M-Box 2, presented by Julius Chan from Avid Australia.

The Best Sound for a Television program went to the team at “The Sergery” for “The Great Outdoors” featuring travel in New Zealand.

Next was the winner in Animation, “Rastus Pistoffious”, a delightful animated short film done by Nigel Christensen who, in his acceptance speech, thanked the composer (himself) the writer (himself) and everyone else involved (himself).

Best Achievement in Television Drama was once again won by the team from “All Saints”. They are making a habit of winning !

Best Achievement for a Tele-feature or mini-series went to the team at Huzzah Sound for their great work on “Mary Bryant”, a mini-series that just aired on Channel 10.

Best Achievement in Sound for a Documentary went to the team at Audioloc for “Vietnam Symphony” made by Film Australia. This Documentary is also a nominee for the upcoming AFI Awards. A black and white short film called “Monster” picked up the Short Film Award. This was written and directed by Jennifer Kent and has picked up an entry in the Sundance Film Festival, well done to you all.

Best Sound Recording went to John Wilkinson for his excellent work in “Peaches” a film made by the SAFC.

Best Achievement in Sound for Film Sound Design went to the fantastic “House of Flying Daggers”, a Chinese film but completed in Sydney at Soundfirm, well done Soundfirm and especially Roger Savage.

Best Achievement in Sound for Film Sound Mixing is awarded for home grown films and this year was won by Tony Vaccher and John Dennison from Audioloc for a very funny film starring John Howard “A Man’s Gotta Do”, well done Tony and John.

This year’s Syd Butterworth Lifetime Achievement Award went to a tireless worker in the film Industry, Phil Judd. Last year’s Lifetime winner Ross Linton and film producer David Hannay entertained us with a presentation of Phil’s work over thirty years. They also read out many accolades from people such as Peter Weir praising Phil for his great work over the many years.

By the time Phil gained the microphone there wasn’t much else to add!

So finally to the last award of the night, the Feature Film Soundtrack of the Year sponsored by Dolby. This year it was awarded to “House of Flying Daggers” so well done again to Roger Savage and the team from Soundfirm Sydney and Soundfirm Beijing.

Well that wrapped up the night, another very successful year for the Australian Film Sound Industry. Well done to all nominees and winners.

Trevor Harrison, President ASSG.
