The 9th Australian Screen Sound Guild Sound Awards was held on Friday the 3rd November 2006 at the Harbourview Hotel in North Sydney. 120 guests attended what turned out to be a fabulous night, judging by the phone calls and emails received.

Our host James Valentine did a fantastic job considering he had a large plastic cast on his ankle after a bike accident. With the aid of crutches he hobbled back and forth to the stage aided by the beautiful Angie Contini who became his “crutch- person”.

Angie is the voice of “The Catfish Club”, our resident band who were also fabulous and entertained us all night. After James got everyone settled, he decided to tell us all how the accident occurred and what followed, all done with sounds, from the swearing to the ambo’s applying the gas, a very very funny story.

Next James introduced myself. I made mention of a previous Audio Guild formed in 1978 that dissolved after many years - I’ll personally make sure that does not happen to this Guild.

Once in front of the microphone I realized what a great venue we had. It was tight, doubt if we could have squeezed another person in but it made for a very intimate setting. With the band centre stage behind James it had a sort of club feel about it.

So, on to the winners.

First up was the Student Encouragement Award - this year won by a final year Sound Recordist student from the AFTRS, Richard Boxhall.

Richard was presented with his award by the new head of Sound
at AFTRS, Mark Ward. Richard was also presented with a M2 box
from Julius Chan from Avid Australia, well done Richard.

So, to the winners in the other catagories.

After dinner, four lucky people won door prizes of a year’s subscription to Encore magazine, kindly donated by Encore.

This year’s Syd Butterworth Lifetime Achievement Award went to Kim Ryrie. Kim, along with Peter Vogel, developed the CMI keyboard.

A photograph of one such keyboard was shown, it’s to be auctioned
next month in America. The keyboard has been signed by over fifty famous musicians and record producers and the opening bid is already US$100,000, so well done to Kim and thanks for the many great stories, especially how Fairlight came by its name.

Well that about wraps up another year of ASSG Awards, next year will be our 10th Awards so it’s bound to be a big event.

A very big “thank you” to our host James Valentine, to our resident
band “The Catfish Club” with Alex West and to our sponsors, without their support none of this would be possible…so please support our sponsors !!

Thank you once again for another good year in the production of
great sound tracks to our film and television productions.
