The 15thAustralian Screen Sound Awards were held on Friday 4th November at The Vibe Hotel, 88 Alfred Street Milsons Point, New South Wales.
142 people attended, making it the biggest crowd we have ever had. Well done to all the members and friends who attended what turned out to be a fantastic night.
So, to the winners on the night……..


The Greg Bell Student Encouragement Award
Awarded to Lara Webb, an AFTRS student.
Lara was presented with a NAGRA LE 2 track recorder by Anthony Sabatini from Broadcast Workshop. Anthony stayed around to present the next award.....

The NAGRA Award for Best Achievement in Sound for a Television Commercial or Program
Tourism Tasmania
Warren Collier, Owen Arnold, Doron Kipen.
Next, we moved on to the animation award....

The DORROUGH LOUDNESS METERS Award for Best Achievement in Sound for an Animation Short Film or Program.

The AFTRS Award for Best Achievement in Sound for a Short Fiction Film

Next up James Waldron from Syntec presented the winners with their awards plus Sennheiser headphones....

The RYCOTE Award for Best Achievement in Sound for a Documentary or Documentary Series
Mrs Carey’s Concert
Bob Scott, Sophie Raymond, Doron Kipen.
Unfortunately Doron was held up and unable to make a speech but Sophie filled in and told us all the trappings of making the Documentary.

Next up, Julius Chan presented the Amber Technology Award....

The AMBER TECHNOLOGY Award for Best Achievement in Sound for a Tele-Feature or Short Run Series
My Place – Series Two
Mark Blackwell, Manel Lopez, Martin Cox, Peter Hall, Lyn Butler, Leon Horrocks, Ian Denato, Natelie Choo, Michol Marsh.
My Place is a wonderful children’s program produced for the ABC.

Next…Dinner. Tom Lowndes played DJ and kept the room pumping. After dinner we screened the great Australian film Galipoli then Peter Fenton (the sound mixer of that film) presented the IF Magazine lucky door prizes. Phil Heywood correctly answered the first question, “What year was the film made”? Answer 1981.
Peter then presented the Lifetime Achievement Award....

The Syd Butterworth Lifetime Achievement Award
The winner…Helen Brown
Helen received a standing ovation, not only because Peter raved about her but they had both worked on the film Galipoli. Helen was the Dialogue Editor, way back in the days of sprockets.
The LEMAC Award for Best Achievement in Sound for Television Drama
Underbelly ; Razor - Episode 6
Guntis Sics, Mark van Kool, Eren Sener, Tom Lowndes, James Bagley, Craig Butters, George Tenure, David Barber, Helen Brown, Stephen R. Smith.
The Lemac award was presented by Ross Boyer from Lemac....

The SENNHEISER Award for Best Achievement in Sound for Film Sound Recording
Mad Bastards
Nick Emond, Johanna Leslie.
Nick and Johanna were presented their awards by James Waldron from Syntec who also presented them with Sennheiser headphones.
Nick and Johanna were over the moon with winning and shared the evening with Johanna’s parents who also attended.
Well, for the big event for the evening, how many people can we fit on the stage? We found out with the Sound Design award being won by the gang from Big Bang Sound.

Legend of the Gaurdians; The Owls of Ga’Hoole
Wayne Pashley, Derryn Pasquill, Polly McKinnon, Sonal Joshi, Fabian Sanjurjo, Paul Huntingford, Martin Kwok, Nicholas Breslin, Damian Candusso, Rick Lisle, Damon Mouris, Michael Kosmider, Martin Oswin, Jenny Ward, Andrew Miller, John Simpson, Lisa Simpson, Libby Villa.
David Hannay presented the Awards. Next up, Angus Robertson from StageOne Sound to present the mixing Award....

The STAGEONE SOUND Award for Best Achievement in Sound for Film Sound Mixing
Oranges and Sunshine
Gethin Creagh, Sam Hayward.
Unfortunately Gethin couldn’t make it but Angus read out an email from him. Sam was very delighted to receive his Award.

Finally to the last Award, presented by Bruce Emery from Dolby....
The DOLBY LABORATORIES Award for Feature Film Soundtrack of the Year

Andrew Plain, Huzzah Sound
Andrew graced the stage and was very happy that his company, Huzzah Sound, picked up the big gong for the year.

Well done to all the winners and the nominees.
A big thank you to Tom Lowndes our DJ, photography by Chloe Paul, Erika Alker of EK Design for her lovely design work of our program and Awards, Lani Tupu for his golden voice-over of the nominations, Chris McKeith for all the work on the Keynote application, his two willing assistants, Lara Webb and Diego Ruiz, and to everyone else who helped make this Awards night possible.
A big thank you to all the people that bought tickets for the Motion Picture Industry Benevolent Society raffle, we raised $480 !!
Also a big thank you to Jenny Ward who donated the prize and organized the raffle, this is what makes a Guild…the members.
