| MOULIN ROUGE AND THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING NOMINATED FOR ACADEMY AWARDS | |||||
|
Australian and New Zealand productions featured strongly in the Sound Oscars for 2002. Australian director Baz Luhrman's "Moulin Rouge" and Peter Jackson's New Zealand blockbuster "The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring" were both nominated for sound in this year's Oscars. ASSG member Guntis Sics was nominated along with Andy Nelson, Anna Behlmer, and Roger Savage for Moulin Rouge, shot at Fox Studios in Sydney. Moulin Rouge took out two awards at the 2001 ASSG Australian Screen Sound Awards, for sound effects editing, and a Technical Achievement Award for music production. Honorary Aussie Gethin Creagh was nominated along with Christopher Boyes, Michael Semanick, and Hammond Peek for The Lord of The Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring. (Gethin's actually a New Zealander, but he worked in Australia for a big part of his career, so if it's good enough for Russell Crowe....!) New Zealand director Peter Jackson's lavish adaptation of the J.R.R Tolkien epic was nominated for a total of twelve awards, including Best Picture. It took out a total of four Oscars on the night. (Click here for a complete list of nominees and winners) Amelie, Blackhawk Down, and Pearl Harbor were also nominated in the sound category, with Blackhawk Down taking out the Oscar on the night. Guntis and Gethin joined a large Australian contingent this year, including Russell Crowe (A Beautiful Mind) and Nicole Kidman (Moulin Rouge). Catherine Martin took out two Oscars for her work on costumes and art direction on Moulin Rouge. The Academy Awards Ceremony was held at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland, Los Angeles, on March 24th, 2002. |
